Stoat Trap

There is a stoat trapping program underway on the track. Stoats are a weasel (sometimes called a short tailed weasel) and are an introduced pest. They were introduced to control rabbits. They have been killing a lot of birds. We passed a couple of hundred traps on the Routeburn and Caples tracks.

An interesting fact is that NZ has no native mammals. The trap is similar in function to a mouse trap but I am assured the spring loaded blades are stronger and could take off a finger if you are not careful.
