John Clancy and I decided we were going to walk Katoomba to Mittagong, but we didn't want to go the usual way since I we both knew the Kowmung well and I had cycled Scotts Main Range a couple of times in recent memory. The route we decided up on was:

  • Day 1: Katoomba, Narrow Neck, Medlow Gap, White Dog fire trail to camp on the Cox's river.
  • Day 2: Oak Terrace, Mount Koorain, Mount Wonga, Kowmung River, Bufford Ridge to Scotts Main Range. High point 1klm south of Bran Jan Hill, south east ridge to Butcher's Creek. (12 hour day.)
  • Day 3: SE ridge towards Green Wattle Mountain, along Broken Rock range to the base of Axehead Mountain. Then east down ridge heading towards mount Field down to Butcher's Creek. (12 hour day.)
  • Day 4: Climb to Mount field and limp along Scotts main range to Yerranderie.
  • Day 5: Bartlett's Head, Yerranderie Peak and then fly to Picton.

John's feet were pretty damaged after day 2, by day 4 he had a very pronounced limp so we pulled out at Yerranderie and left the 2nd part of the walk for another time.
