The Hume and Hovell trail is a well kept secret. It follows in the footsteps of the 1824/25 Hume and Hovell Expedition.
The Hume and Hovell Expedition is an exploratory trip that happened in 1824 when Hamilton Hume and William Hovell walked 1,900 km in four months in 1824/25 from Yass to Geelong near Melbourne and return in four months.
The Hume and Hovell Track honours Hume and Hovell and runs 426 kms from Hume’s house in Yass to Albury on the Victorian border.
Having now walked all the way to Thomas Boyd Trackhead, near Tumut, we decided on the next section to take us to Talbingo. We did Day 1 as a day walk, and Paloma joined us. Day 1 finished at the Snowy Mountains Highway. From there we caught a taxi back to the start and then drove to Tumut for the night. Days 2-4 were a full pack walk with overnights in a tent.
Our intinerary was:
Day | Proposed Start | Proposed Finish | Published Walking Time (hrs) | Published Walking Distance (Kms) |
1 | Thomas Boyd Trackhead | Snowy Mountains Hwy Junction of Tumut Plains Rd | 8 | 18.8 |
2 | Snowy Mountains Hwy Junction of Tumut Plains Rd | Windy Point Campsite | 9.5 | 24.7 |
3 | Windy Point Campsite | Ben Smith Campsite | 8 | 20 |
4 | Ben Smith Campsitee | Talbingo | 4 | 10 |

We had orginally planned contemplated this as a 5 day walk but we decided that we could do it in 4 without too much effort.
