The day started with more , slightly boring, firetrail walking. At the 15km walk we started to sidle up a ridge and the up hill walking broke the monotony of the Foreshore Firetrail. Once we had crossed over the ridge we had a gradual climb up to a saddle. Beyong th saddle we had descended to next to a creek that led to Ben Smith Campsite.
The track down to Ben Smith Campsite was a challenge. The first half of the track had recently beeen re-cut. The last 600m was a tough bush bash, trying to avoid blackberries. We discovered that Ben Smith campsite is currently closed, but we camped there anyway because we didn’t know of any other good options.
The first 2/3 of the walk was flat, following the Foreshore Trail. At the 15km mark the climb over a ridge begins. The climb looks dramatic on the hill profile, but on the ground it was a relatively straighforward climb on a fire trail with enough short downs to provide respite from the climb. We had a late lunch on top of the first ridge and then descended.
The second high point is a saddle that takes you down off the high country towards Ben Smith Campsite and the water.
