Hume and Hovell Trail

Part 1 - Yass to Tumut
(The Captain's Campsite to Thomas Boyd Trackhead)

Chris, David and Paul 8th - 13th December 2024
(200 years earler Hume and Hovell were on their expedtion near Yass).

The Hume and Hovell trail is a well kept secret. It follows in the footsteps of the 1824/25 Hume and Hovell Expedition.

The Hume and Hovell Expedition is an exploratory trip that happened in 1824 when Hamilton Hume and William Hovell walked 1,900 km in four months in 1824/25 from Yass to Geelong near Melbourne and return in four months.

The Hume and Hovell Track honours Hume and Hovell and runs 426 kms from Hume’s house in Yass to Albury on the Victorian border.

The first 31.3kms of track takes you from Hamiltons Hume’s house, on the outskirts of Yass, to the Captain’s campsite. We decided to skip this section since it is all road walking. Road walking is tedious at the best of times, but in the heat of summer it would be quite unpleasant.

Our walk was to start at The Captains campsite and over the course of 5 days end at Boyd Trackhead.

Our intinerary was:

Day Proposed Start Proposed Finish Published Walking Time (hrs) Published Walking Distance (Kms)
1 The Captains Flat Tumut Reflections Recreation Park Burrinjuck Waters 7 20.4
2 Reflections Recreation Park Burrinjuck Waters Fitzpatrick Trackhead 7 15
3 Fitzpatrick Trackhead Log Bridge Creek Campsite 6 12.1
4 Log Bridge Creek Campsite Barrois Campsite 8.5 19.3
5 Barrois Campsite Thomas Boyd Trackhead 9.5 24.7

We had orginally planned a 6th day of walking but the expected 35 degree forecast and walking out in the open deterred us.
